Where to find real and quality food in Plovdiv?

More and more people in Plovdiv are interested in food with a clear origin, clean ingredients and attention to nature. Real food is not just a choice of taste – it is care for health, support for local producers and respect for the natural cycle of nature.

One of the most striking examples of this is Ferma Gorata – a polycultural farm established in 2017 in the village of Malko Gradishte, at the foot of the Eastern Rhodopes. There, animals are raised freely, among polycultural pastures and under the shade of old trees, without hormones, without routine antibiotics and without GMO feed. The main emphasis is on the meat-producing breed Aberdeen Angus, known for its excellent marbling and tenderness, but the farmers also take care of chickens and hens, which receive natural feed from the polycultural areas, as well as pigs fed with plant residues and cover crops. The dairy products – cow and sheep milk – are processed using traditional methods, without preservatives, palm fat or powdered milk, which guarantees fresh butter, cheeses and yogurt with an authentic taste.

The Gorata follows sustainable livestock farming practices inspired by Joel Salatin’s methods – rotational grazing, free range farming and care for “living” soil rich in microorganisms, dung beetles and worms. This improves the health of the animals and ensures that the meat and other products – beef, chicken, pork and dairy – have a higher nutritional value, intense flavour and a natural fat and protein profile. Some of the produce can be found in their three butcher shops – two in Sofia and one in Plovdiv – as well as online with delivery throughout the country.

In addition to directly from producers, quality products can also be found in specialized stores such as Baharika. The family business of “Valevi Fruit 61” started in 2012 from the Plovdiv markets and today already has six locations in the city. They offer nuts, spices, legumes, flours, dried fruits and organic foods of high quality.

Last but not least are the markets – traditional urban spaces where you can still find a direct connection with local fruit and vegetable producers. Among the many retailers are real farmers who offer seasonal produce grown in the region. Recognizing them requires a little more attention, conversation and trust, but it is there that one can find the freshest and most authentic flavors. The markets remain the living heart of local food – a place where quality is recognized not by the packaging, but by the taste.
Real food in Plovdiv exists. We just need to know where to look for it and choose consciously for our health and to support local production.
