There are places under the hills that don’t just sell books, but seem to tell stories. As soon as you step through the door, you can smell the scent of paper, ink, and time, and the pages hold the whispers of dozens of destinies. If you’re one of those people who like to discover forgotten titles and true book treasures, here are a few places worth remembering:
Bookstore “Sofia-T”, Kapana

Hidden among the small streets of Kapana, the bookstore “Sofia-T” is a true haven for connoisseurs. Established more than three decades ago, it carries the spirit of its owner – Sofia, who transformed the former pub into a space filled with history and culture.
With the help of restorers of Renaissance furniture, the place has been designed with attention to detail and in the spirit of the Kapana art district. Here you will find rare books, classic music albums, and publications that are hard to find elsewhere.
The name of the bookstore is no coincidence – “Sofia” means wisdom, and the added “T” is from the owner’s surname. Behind it stands many years of experience in book distribution and a love of books inherited from the family. Part of her personal library is still preserved and remains off-sale – because some books simply cannot have a price. Today, “Sofia-T” is one of those places that still preserves the look of Kapana.
Nadezhda Bookstore
Located near the underpass on 152 6th September Blvd., Nadezhda Bookstore is a place that combines practicality and a love of books. Here, the selection is rich and carefully selected – from classic titles to rarer editions that can surprise even the most ardent reader.
In addition to books, you will also find a variety of school supplies, which makes the bookstore a convenient choice for both students and parents, as well as for anyone who simply wants to get lost among the shelves.
Antique bookstore “Black Cat”
At 77A “6-ti septemvri” blvd., right across from DKC 2, is one of the most interesting places for hunting for book treasures – the antique bookstore “Black Cat”.
Here, every book has its own story, and the selection often includes rare and hard-to-find editions. The place is a real hit for collectors and those who like to stumble upon unexpected finds.
Sasho Kostov’s store, Kapana

Behind it are years of searching – in garages, basements and recycling centers, from where thousands of books and objects of cultural value have been rescued. And indeed, among the piles, real treasures can often be found.
Don’t look for a specific title – just go. You will always find something there that you didn’t expect. In addition to books, the space also hides old magazines, paintings, leather suitcases, decorative objects and a bunch of other small discoveries.
In the last 6 months, he has already announced special book sales twice at prices of 1 lev/1 euro. His small Alley of Books includes between 2 and 3 thousand works, specially selected by the connoisseur himself in a variety of genres. His goal is to motivate as many people as possible to start reading or continue to do so. According to his observations, an absolute variety of reading material is sought – from technical to foreign language and musical literature.
The book tables around the Central Station
Once upon a time, the area around the Central Station was a lively book market – with pavilions full of books, magazines and crossword puzzles. Today, only a few tables remain of it, located near the underpass. They are like a memory from a noisier time, but they still retain their charm. Among the arranged books you can come across antiquarian editions and unexpected finds – a quiet reminder that the book culture in Plovdiv never completely disappears.
And where are your hidden places where you find rare and valuable treasures?
